San Antonio de Chacao is a city in the Región de los Lagos in the south of the South American Andean state of Chile and is located on the country's second largest island, Chiloé . The Chacao Channel is a strait that separates the island of Chiloé from the mainland.

history

Like Castro, the city was founded as a port city by Martín Ruiz de Gamboa on February 12, 1567 . On February 28, 1558, Alonso de Ercilla y Zúñiga came to the place where Chacao is today and wrote the famous literary feat La Araucana , in which he reports on his crossing of the Chacao Canal.

Chacao was destroyed by the Spaniards themselves to found Ancud , after which the reconstruction began. At the end of the 19th century, the German summer chopper organized the construction of the new Chacaos. Today's main street in the city bears his name.

In 1710 the Chacao Church was built.

today

Chacao is the gateway to the province and every year a traditional Spanish Chiloes festival (Fiesta costumbrista hispano chilota de Chacao) is celebrated. The inhabitants of Chacaos say of themselves that they are “ Chilotes ” and not Chileans.

A large suspension bridge, the Puente Bicentenario de Chiloé , was to be built near Chacao , but this was not realized for cost reasons.
