Chaetocnema hortensis belongs to the flea beetles (tribe Alticini, subfamily Galerucinae) from the family of leaf beetles (Chrysomelidae).
features
The beetles are 1.5 to 2.3 millimeters in size. They have a bronze-brown or bronze-copper colored basic color. The pronotum is densely punctured. Numerous rows of dots run over the wing covers , the first 2 or 3 of which run irregularly in the front area. The basal antennae are yellow-red. The posterior femora are greatly thickened. All femora are dark, while the tibia and tarsi are yellowish red.
distribution
Chaetocnema hortensis is a Palearctic species. It occurs in almost all of Europe. The species is absent on the islands of Ireland and Iceland. To the east, its range extends to the Far East of Russia. The species is also found in the Caucasus and the Central Asian republics.
Way of life
The wintering adult beetles become active again in March / April. The beetles live on different types of grass. The larvae drill at the base of grain stalks and can cause considerable damage in the process. They take 14–22 days to develop. They then leave the stems to pupate in the ground. The new generation of beetles appear between the end of June and August.
Similar species
Chaetocnema aridula is larger at 2.5–3 mm. In addition, the rows of points on the Elytres are even more irregular.
