Chalinochromis is a genus from the family of cichlids (Cichlidae), which is endemic in Lake Tanganyika and lives there in the rocky zone. The genus includes three described species . The name refers to the drawing on the head, which is reminiscent of reins ( Gr .: "Chalinos" = reins).
features
Chalinochromis species have an elongated, cylindrical body, the belly line is almost straight, the back line slightly arched. They are of a beige base color and have a typical dark reins markings on the head. Vertical stripes may be present or absent. The soft rayed part of the dorsal and anal fin and the pelvic fins are pointed, the caudal fin is straight and has rounded corners. The two species are 12 and 15 cm long. Older males develop a forehead hump. Chalinochromis is closely related to the genus Julidochromis . Chalinochromis species, however, have typical wart-like papillae on the lips, which the Julidochromis species lack. The ossified suborbitalia (bones below the eye socket), which in Julidochromis is only cartilaginous, and the exclusively conical teeth are characteristic of the genus . The anal fin has more than three fin spines, the number of dorsal fin spines is less than that of Julidochromis .
Chalinochromis species live very close to rocky biotopes and form territories there , which they defend vigorously against conspecifics or other cichlids. The up to 200 eggs are deposited in a cave or narrow crevice.
species
The genus has not yet been well studied taxonomically. Three species have already been taxonomically examined, at least two others not yet.
