history

For the 100th birthday of the Michelin mascot " Bibendum ", Edouard Michelin founded the Challenge Bibendum. The premiere event took place in 1998 in Clermont-Ferrand , Michelin's head office. In the following years the event made guest appearances in Los Angeles (2001), Heidelberg (2002), San Francisco (2003), Shanghai (2004 and 2007), Kyoto (2005), Paris (2006), Rio de Janeiro (2010) and in Berlin (2011). The participating experts come from vehicle manufacturers and the automotive supplier industry, from energy suppliers and research institutions. There are also representatives from politics and business.

At the event, which lasts several days, the experts will present approaches, strategies and solutions on the topics of environmentally friendly vehicles, alternative drive solutions and future transport concepts. In addition, the Challenge Bibendum sees itself as a platform for mutual exchange: In panels, conferences and workshops, the automotive players discuss possibilities for sustainable mobility in road traffic with decision-makers from politics, business and science as well as media representatives. An extensive practical test in the form of an environmental rally for the vehicles presented is also an integral part. On this vehicle parade with around 200 vehicles, cars, buses, trucks and city vehicles have to prove their practical suitability and performance under real conditions. This includes braking and acceleration tests as well as measuring energy consumption and noise generation. The vehicles with the lowest energy consumption receive a special award.
