history

Chand Baori
stages

The Chand Baori was built in the 8th and 9th centuries AD during the reign of King Chanda from the Nikumbha dynasty . It was dedicated to the Hindu deity Harshat Mata, the goddess of fun and joy.

construction

The Chand Baori is the largest and deepest stepwell in India with a depth of almost 20 meters. The water at the bottom of the fountain is limited on three sides by a total of 3,500 steps, which are spread over 13 floors. On the fourth side there is a kind of pavilion with three floors and two protruding terraces. There is a performing arts stage and royal space.

The perfect geometry of the well is exceptional for the time it was built.

use

The stepwell was built in the arid region to store rainwater. Since it is 5-6 degrees Celsius cooler at the bottom of the well compared to the surface of the earth, the Chand Baori was also used as a place for community gatherings during hot periods.

Today the Chand Baori is mainly used as a tourist attraction.

The stepwell has also been used as a backdrop for numerous films, such as The Dark Knight Rises .
