The Chant-Type (from Chan nel T anker) was a series of coastal tankers built in Great Britain during World War II . They belong to the group of Empire ships .

description

The series was built on behalf of the Ministry of War Transport (MOWT). The design of the series is based on the plans of the coasters of the Empire F-Class . The ships were designed as pure coastal tankers with a two-hull construction and a length of around 45 meters and a carrying capacity of around 400 tons. The ships had a forecastle , a deeply drawn main deck and a deckhouse arranged very aft above the raised poop and the engine room . The hull with transom consisted almost exclusively of straight-cut steel plates to simplify the construction. The ships were built in sections , with the individual sections largely not being manufactured in the shipyards, but being supplied from various farms. The drive system each served a diesel engine . All units were delivered in 1944 and were given the name Chant with a number attached. The series of 43 units in total was carried out by the following five different shipyards.

One of the main uses of the chants was to support the Normandy landings .
