Zhao Chanyuan

Zhao Chanyuan (* 1979 in Xi'an ) is a Chinese guzheng player. She is a qualified pedagogue, composer, singer and freelance musician for guzheng and harp . She completed an international concert career as a solo artist and in various ensembles in Germany, France, Egypt, Morocco, Italy, the Netherlands and China.

education

At the age of six, Zhao Chanyuan began playing the guzheng, a vaulted board zither with 21 strings, which is one of the oldest instruments in traditional Chinese music . Zhao Chanyuan took part in national competitions at a young age and won numerous prizes. She gave solo concerts in China, but also took part in traditional music ensembles.

From 1997 to 2001 she studied the Chinese traditional instruments Guzheng at the Conservatory in Xi'an with Zhou Yanjia, Gaozicheng, Zhaomanqin Fanzifeng and Yinqun, among others. She also received piano lessons from Huangruike and composition courses from Lujinyong, Zangxuru, Licun. She completed her studies with a Bachelor of Arts .

From 2002 to 2007 she majored in harp with Monika Wischnowski and harp didactics with Han-An Liu at the Cologne University of Music , Wuppertal (degree: Dipl. - Instrumental pedagogue). From 2008 to 2011 he studied composition at the Folkwang University of the Arts.

Musician and teacher

In 2011, she was a lecturer at the Confucius Institute in the Ruhr Metropolis and a research assistant at the Institute for Lifelong Learning in the partnership program with Tsinghua University . She received a lectureship at the Folkwang University of the Arts for intercultural competence and diversity competence. She founded the concert series Klangraum - Welten: Podium for ethnic art encounters & improvised music with Benjamin Leuschner . Since 2012 she has been the producer and managing director of the music publisher Ars Metaphonia . In 2014 she was a teacher at the City Music School Ratingen and a doctoral candidate for Sinology at the University of Heidelberg .

Since 2016 she has been studying musicology at the Folkwang University of the Arts in the Ruhr area.

Chanyuan Zhao has a diverse repertoire of contemporary and traditional Chinese music for her instrument. She currently lives in Essen and works with percussionist Benjamin Leuschner in the duo Seidenstrasse .
