Patronage and location

The chapel, under the patronage of John the Evangelist , is located about 70 meters from the Annunciation Chapel of Ħal-Millieri and a ruined chapel dedicated to the Visitation of the Virgin , in the area of the abandoned village of Ħal-Millieri on the outskirts of Żurrieq. Around 1575, a chapel of the Archangel Michael, which is now in ruins, stood in its immediate vicinity . The chapel's patronage festival is May 6th.

history

The chapel already existed in 1481 and was maintained by an Andrea Zammit at that time. During his visit to Malta in 1575, Petrus Dusina found the chapel to be in poor condition and should be desecrated. Regardless of this, it still existed in 1634, when it was threatened to close again. However, the chapel was rebuilt and has remained essentially unchanged since then. Only a new altar was added in 1931, and the forecourt, lined with a low wall, was leveled.

The building has been looked after and maintained by Dín l-Art Ħelwa since 2004 . During clearing-up work, a curiosity was found on the site of the adjacent St. Michaels Chapel: a stone on which the signature of the 19th century Maltese painter Giuseppe Cali was carved.

architecture

The surrounding wall of a small courtyard north of the chapel marks the location of the St. Michael's Chapel, which was closed in 1667. Both buildings were erected directly on the massive stone floor. On the open square forecourt there is a stone column on a square base, which is crowned by a cross and surrounded by two circular steps. The chapel itself can be reached via four steps and a small walled forecourt.

The existing building is dated to the middle of the 17th century, it stands on the foundation walls of a previous building. The facade is unstructured, apart from a rectangular window to the left of the entrance. To the right of the entrance is a plaque with the inscription Non Gode l'Immunita Ecclesiae . The archway of the entrance shows architectural elements of the Renaissance . A bell bearer rises in the center of the facade and is crowned by a cross .
