Char (unit)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The char was an old Swiss liquid measure and was valid in the canton of Geneva and in the canton of Vaud . The measure had some differences in the cantons, but was the same in concept as the fuder . The char was particularly widespread in the wine trade.

Canton of Geneva

  • 1 Char = 12 Setiers / Eimer = 576 Pots / Mass = 288 Quarterons = 32.667 ¼ Parisian cubic inches = 647 ⅓ Liter
  • Documented deviation: 1 char = 27.648 Parisian cubic inches = 548 liters
  • 2 pots = 1 quarteron = 113 3/7 Parisian cubic inches
  • 1 pot = 56.7 Paris cubic inches = 1 1/9 liter
  • 1 quarteron = 96 Paris cubic inches = 1.904 liters
  • 1 set = 54 liters
  • 1 quarteron = 2.25 liters

Canton of Vaud

The measure was legally established on May 27, 1822 and introduced in the Canton of Vaud on January 1, 1823.

  • 1 Char = 18 Setiers = 864 Pots = 432 Quarterons = 43.401 Parisian Cubic Inches = 860 Liters (= 860.908 Liters)
  • Documented deviation: 1 char = 400 pots = 23.444 Parisian cubic inches = 465 liters
  • 1 pot = 1.35 liters
  • 1 char = 16 setiers = 480 pots
  • 1 char = 16 sets / buckets = 48 brocs / supports = 480 pots / measure = 4800 verres / glasses = 648 liters
