Charles A. Halbert Public Library is the national library of St. Kitts and Nevis .
history
Private book clubs have existed in St. Kitts and Nevis since the early 19th century. In 1890, then Governor William Haynes-Smith established a public library. Book stores have been set up in Cayon , Lodge , Molineux , Verchilds , Saddlers , Dieppe Bay and Sandy Point Town . In 1894 the library got its own building in East Independence Square . In 1982 a fire destroyed the entire building. The library was then housed in Shirley House , Mitchell Street from 1985 to 1997 . Since 1997 the library has been on Cunningham Street .
The library is named after the philanthropist Charles Ashton Halbert .
