Carlo Cesi
Carlo Cesi or Cesio (born April 17, 1622 in Antrodoco , † January 6, 1686 in Rieti ) was an Italian painter and engraver .
life and work
Carlo Cesi was born as the son of Pietro Cesi, who originally came from Todi , in Antrodoco in the province of Rieti in Lazio . In 1642 he moved to Rieti , where he began studying drawing and painting . He then went to Rome , where he joined Pietro da Cortona , who later introduced him to important personalities of the time, including Queen Christine of Sweden and Cardinal Decio Azzolini, who also supported his admission to the Accademia di San Luca in 1651, which he would lead 24 years later.
Pascoli names numerous early works, which, however, are no longer verifiable. His fresco depicting the Judgment of Solomon in the Galleria Alexander VII (Sala degli Ambasciatori) in the Quirinal Palace in Rome, which he executed in 1657, has been preserved. Around 1659 he painted the pictures for the high altar of the now no longer existing church of S. Dionigi alle Quattro Fontane, part of which, a representation of the Trinity , Maria Immacolata and St. Dionysius , have been preserved in the Académie de France in Rome . Around 1660 he created the altarpiece of the Holy Family with Saint Anne for the Capella Cesi in Santa Maria della Pace , before 1663 the altarpiece The Mystical Marriage of Saint Catherine for the Capella Cesi in Santa Maria Maggiore . In 1661 he painted the frescoes in the Palazzo Boncompagni Corcos, probably in the early 1670s, he painted the Virgin and Child and the Saints Carlo Borromeo and Filippo Neri for the Chiesa di Re Magi in the Palazzo di Propaganda Fide .
However, Cesi is best known as a reproduction engraver . He engraved several series of etchings after ceiling paintings from Baroque Rome:
- 1657: 44 sheets after the frescoes in the Galleria Farnese by Annibale Carracci
- 1661: 8 sheets after the frescoes in the Galleria of Palazzo Doria-Pamphili by Pietro da Cortona
- undated, before 1677: 9 sheets after the frescoes by Giovanni Lanfranco in the Capella Bongiovanni in Sant'Agostino
- 1680: 8 sheets after the dome frescoes by Giovanni Lanfranco in Sant'Andrea della Valle
- undated: 10 sheets after depictions of putti by Guido Reni in the Palazzo Mazarino (today Palazzo Pallavicini Rospigliosi )
The existence of numerous conditions and re-engravings testifies to the popularity of these consequences.
In recognition of this, Carlo Cesi was appointed Camerlengo dell'Arte dei pittori until 1670 and head ( Principe ) of the Accademia di San Luca in 1675 .
Cesi devotes a lot of time to teaching and theoretical reflections, as evidenced by his book Cognizione dei muscoli del corpo umano per uso del disegno ( Recognizing the muscles of the human body for use in drawing ) (Rome 1679).
In 1685 he finally retired to Rieti, where he died a year later.
