Sandy Point is the second largest city on the island of Saint Kitts in Saint Kitts and Nevis . The place is located in the northwest of the south coast of St. Kitts and is the main town of the Parish Saint Anne Sandy Point . It has approx. 3,100 inhabitants.

geography

The place is on the coast with Pump Bay , about three kilometers west of Mount Liamuiga (1156 m, Mount Liamuiga ). The coastal road connects Newcastle with the places Fig Tree and Saint Paul Capisterre (Newton Ground) in the north, as well as with New Guinea in the Parish Saint Thomas Middle Island in the south.

history

It is said that the explorer Sir Thomas Warner disembarked at Sandy Point in 1623. Soon after, the place was founded and developed into an important trading center on St. Kitts with one of the most important ports. The place was also the center of tobacco growing. A remnant of this time are the former Dutch warehouses of the West India Company on the coast, of which there were previously more than 300.

After 1727, trade shifted to Basseterre . In 1984 the port was closed after Hurricane Klaus .

Another relic of the earlier meaning are two forts: the Brimstone Hill Fortress in Brimstone Hill Fortress National Park and the Fort Charles (Saint Kitts) . Brimstone Hill was the strongest British fortress in the Eastern Caribbean .

economy

Sandy Point Town is still a locally important center with an aerospace engineering factory . There is a high school (Sandy Point High School) and the hospital in the village. Today tourism also plays a major role. Brimstone Hill is UNESCO - World Heritage and the Sandy Point National Marine Park is a popular destination for divers. There is Pump Bay Beach with dark volcanic sand and Paradise Reef and Anchors Away Reef .
