The Charles Berry Bridge is a bascule bridge in Lorain , in Lorain County in the US state of Ohio . The bridge leads US Highway 6 over the Black River .
It was built in the late 1930s and opened in 1940. The bridge, still called Erie Avenue Bridge at the time, was considered the longest bascule bridge in the world.
After extensive renovation work, it was reopened to traffic on Veterans Day in 1988 and named after Charles Joseph Berry , a corporal in the United States Marine Corps who was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor for his services during World War II in Iwojima .
It is currently the second largest bascule bridge in the world , with a span of 100.6 m (330 ft ) and a total length of 320.95 m (1053 ft) comprising the eleven openings of the access ramps. According to the Ohio Department of Transportation , 14,720 vehicles crossed the bridge daily in 2005.
