The Black River (also Canesadooharie River or Riviere en Grys ) is a 24.5 km long tributary of Lake Erie on its south bank in the northern US state of Ohio .
Together with its headwaters, the Black River drains 1,206 km² of predominantly agricultural land in the catchment area of Lake Erie. It is created by the confluence of the West Branch Black River and East Branch Black River in the village of Elyria in Lorain County , then flows further north and flows into Lake Erie in the city of Lorain .
The approximately 48 km long West Branch Black River rises 5 km north of the village of Nova in northern Ashland ( 41 ° 3 ′ 3 ″ N , 82 ° 17 ′ 58 ″ W ) at an altitude of 337 m and drains an area of around 450 km² .
The East Branch Black River is formed about 5 km northwest of the village of Lodi in northern Ashland County by the confluence of the headwaters East Fork Black River and West Fork East Branch Black River ( 41 ° 3 ′ 1 ″ N , 82 ° 2 ′ 6 ″ W ) at an altitude of 263 m. With its source rivers it drains an area of 575 km².
