Charles Catterall (born October 16, 1914 in Salisbury , † November 1, 1966 ) was a South African boxer . He won the silver medal in featherweight at the Olympic Games in Berlin in 1936 .

Career

Charles Catterall, a South African boxer, was born in Salisbury, South Africa, now Harare, Zimbabwe, in 1914. As an amateur boxer, he only took part in two major international championships, both times in featherweight. After winning a medal at the 1936 Olympic boxing tournament in Berlin, he became a professional boxer. As a professional, he boxed exclusively in South Africa or in the neighboring countries. From the beginning of 1940 he lived in Northern Rhodesia, today's Zambia. In 1946 he ended his career as a boxer. Charles (Charlie) Catterall died in 1966 at the age of 52.

Career as a professional boxer

After the 1936 Olympic Games in Berlin, Charlie Catterall became a professional boxer. He fought his first fight on October 31, 1936 in Johannesburg, South Africa. He came in featherweight to a point victory over his compatriot Jan van Staden. On November 18, 1939, he was in Johannesburg with a point victory over Alec Hannan South African featherweight champion. That was the only title fight that he contested as a professional boxer. On June 15, 1940, he fought in Luanshya, Northern Rhodesia (now Zambia) in a fight in which he defeated Bob Bradley from South Africa. After this fight he continued to live in Northern Rhodesia and laid down his South African championship title. After an almost six-year break in the ring, he played his last fight on March 9, 1946 in Johannesburg, in which he was defeated in the lightweight against Alf James from South Africa.

In total, Charles Catterall enters 18 fights as a professional boxer, of which he won 16. Once he boxed a draw and lost one fight.
