Career

Josef Miner grew up in Breslau and started boxing there as a teenager at the Reichsbahn SV . He was only 1.58 meters tall and at the end of 1933 was fighting his way into the top German class of amateur boxers in the bantamweight division .

In March 1934 he started in Stuttgart at the national elimination tournament European Championship 1934 and was only defeated in the bantamweight division in the semifinals against Hans Ziglarski , Munich. In July 1934 he became the first German bantamweight champion in Nuremberg with a points win in the final over the Cologne Cremer.

At the beginning of 1935 Josef Miner switched to featherweight. In this weight class, he also started at the German championship this year. In the semifinals he won a victory over Michael Ostländer from Aachen, but in the final he lost to Arthur Büttner , who, like him, came from Breslau, on points.

In 1936 Josef Miner became German champion for the second time with a points victory in the final over Rustemeyer from Cologne. He was then accepted into the German core Olympic team of amateur boxers and was able to prepare specifically for the Olympic Games in Berlin. At the Olympic boxing tournament he defeated Khalil Amira El-Maghrabi, Egypt, Remi Lescrauwaert, Belgium and Jack Tredaway, Great Britain, in the featherweight division. In the semifinals he lost to Charles Catterall from South Africa on points. He then won the battle for the Olympic bronze medal against Deszo Frigyes from Hungary on points. As the best European boxer in his weight class, he was also officially awarded the title of European Champion .

In 1937 Josef Miner won again the German featherweight championship with a points victory over Arenz, Berlin. At the European Championships in Milan in 1937, it was not he, but Heinrich Heese from Düsseldorf who was used. In the same year he defeated the Swedish champion Kurt Kreuger by knockout in the 3rd round in a match between the Reichsbahn TSV Breslau against JF Linea Stockholm .

On February 28, 1938 Josef Miner lost to his eternal opponent Arthur Büttner on points at the championship of Upper Silesia in Breslau. After that he no longer appeared as an amateur boxer. He fell in World War II in 1944 .
