Charles Covington

Charles Covington (* around 1940) is an American jazz pianist and organist ( Hammond organ ).

Live and act

Covington began his musical career in the early 1960s and by the end of the decade worked as organist in George Benson's band , with whom he made his first recordings in 1968 and performed at the Newport Jazz Festival in 1969 , and with JJ Johnson ( Betwixt and Between , A&M / CTI ). He also accompanied the singers Abbey Lincoln , Eartha Kitt , Shirley Horn and Ethel Ennis . In the following decade he played in New York with O'Donel Levy , on whose LPs Breeding of Mind (1982), Dawn of a New Day ,Everything I Do Gonna Be Funky (1973) and Windows (1976) he starred. From 1977 he worked as a pianist with Nathan Page . In 1991 he recorded his debut album It's Time for Love in trio format (with woodwind player Davey Yarborough and drummer Richard Seals); In 1993 he was a guest musician on Gary Thomas ' album Exile's Gate ( JMT ). He taught jazz piano at Howard University and the Peabody Conservatory for over twenty years .
