Charles David Goodman (born May 9, 1928 in New York City ) is an American physicist who deals with experimental nuclear physics.

Goodman graduated from Clark University with a bachelor's degree in 1949 and received a PhD in physics from the University of Rochester in 1955 . He then went to Oak Ridge National Laboratory , where he became the lab's senior physicist . Since 1980 he was a professor at Indiana University .

He investigated the core structure using charge transfer reactions such as (p, n) reactions. If a spin exchange takes place, these are Gamow-Teller transitions and their investigation with (p, n) reactions is important for the interpretation of experiments on neutrino observations through neutrino capture in nuclei.

1972/73 he was visiting professor at the University of Colorado in Boulder . In 1983 he received the Tom W. Bonner Prize for Nuclear Physics . In 1991 he received the Humboldt Research Award . He is a Fellow of the American Physical Society , IEEE Fellow, and the American Association for the Advancement of Science .

Goodman has been married since 1952 and has a son and daughter.
