Charles Defrémery

Charles François Defrémery (born December 8, 1822 in Cambrai , † August 18, 1883 in Saint-Valery-en-Caux ) was a French orientalist who specialized in the history of Arabic and Persian literature .

Life

Defrémery held the chair for Arabic language and literature at the Institut national des langues et civilizations orientales and was a member of the Société asiatique based in Paris . In 1860 he was appointed a corresponding member of the Academy of Sciences in St. Petersburg in the Department of Oriental Manuscripts. In 1869 he was elected a member of the Académie des inscriptions et belles-lettres . Since 1871 he held the professorship for Arabic at the Collège de France . He published translations of some of the writings of Arabic and Persian authors, including Mirkhond , Saadi, and Hondemir .

He is the author of numerous writings, some of which were published under the title Mémoires d'histoire orientale . After the discovery of the original manuscript of Ibn Battūta's travelogue (1304-1368 or 1377) by the French in Morocco , Defrémery worked with Beniamino Raffaello Sanguinetti from 1853 to 1858 on its translation and edition. Together with the French translation, it was published in four volumes in the Collection d'ouvrages orientaux series of the Société asiatique . The English translation by Hamilton Alexander Rosskeen Gibb ( The Travels of Ibn Battuta ), published in various volumes by the Hakluyt Society , is based on the Arabic text of this edition.
