Charles Jean Julien Depéret (born June 25, 1854 in Perpignan , † May 18, 1929 in Lyon ) was a French geologist and paleontologist .

Depéret was initially a military doctor for ten years (from 1877), first in Algeria and then in Sathonay . In 1888 he became a lecturer (Chargé du cours) in Marseille and from 1889 he was professor of geology in Lyon (Faculté des Sciences) and doyen of the Faculté des Sciences in Lyon.

Depéret dealt with the Tertiary of the Rhone Valley and its fossil mammals. He was known for his work La transformation du monde animale (1907, German edition 1909). Among other things, he supports Cope's law (which is therefore sometimes also named after him). Ten sheets of the geological map of France come from him. He is also known for archaeological work on prehistory, especially in Solutré . He supported the controversial authenticity of Glozel's prehistoric finds .

He was a corresponding since 1898 and since 1913 a member of the Académie des sciences and a member of the Russian Academy of Sciences , the Geological Society in London and the Academies of New York and Barcelona.

In 1896 he first described Majungasaurus crenatissimus (as Megalosaurus) and Titanosaurus madagascariensis from Madagascar ( Maevarano formation ), in 1917 Hyaenodon nouleti and in 1912 with Mazeran the conchostraken genus Euestheria . In 1892 he introduced the stage of the Miocene Burdigalium (his stage Vindobonium did not prevail). In 1910 he described a Eucladoceros find and in 1908 he first described Amphirhagatherium .
