Charles Dowding

Charles Dowding is an English geographer , gardener, and book author .

Life

He grew up on a farm in Somerset (UK). After graduating from Cambridge University with a degree in geography in 1980 , he moved back to the country where he became a pioneer in organic vegetable gardening.

In 1991 he leased his growing garden in England, set up a nursery in the deepest province of Zambia and lived in Gascony for a while before returning to Somerset.

There he turned back to the vegetable gardener, wrote numerous articles for specialist magazines and now gives seminars and courses on this.

In 2007 and 2008 he also published two very successful books on vegetable gardening.

One of his best-known practices is the so-called “No Dig Garden”, a method of creating the vegetable garden without digging.

In May 2017 Dowding published the book "No Dig Organic Home & Garden: Grow, Cook, Use & Store Your Harvest" together with Stephanie Hafferty, which received the Garden Media Guild (UK) Practical Book of the Year Award 2017.
