Charles Hermans
Charles Hermans (born August 17, 1839 in Brussels , † December 7, 1924 in Menton ) was a Belgian painter of portraits, landscapes, seascapes and genre scenes.
After taking lessons from the Brussels painters François-Joseph Navez and Louis Gallait , Hermans studied at the École Supérieure des Arts Saint-Luc in Brussels. Then he was a student of Charles Gleyre in his Paris studio.
From 1862 to 1867 he went on study trips to Spain and Italy, where he was inspired by the life of monks in monasteries.
Hermans became a member of the "Société libre des Beaux-Arts", founded in Brussels on March 1, 1868, whose members were supporters of naturalism .
The large-format painting “À l'aube” (In the Twilight, 1875) is considered to be Herman's greatest success. Because of the radical political message, the picture became the subject of heated debate.
