Charles Jean Marie Barbaroux (born March 6, 1767 in Marseille , † June 25, 1794 in Bordeaux ) was a French politician.

biography

After studying law , he first worked as the municipal secretary of the city of Marseille , which later sent him to Paris as a representative . During the Tuileries storm on August 10, 1792, he commanded the Marseilles battalion .

In September 1792 he was elected as a representative of his home department Bouches-du-Rhône as a member of the National Convention, in which he joined the Girondins . At this time he also came into close relationships with Jean-Marie Roland de La Platière and his wife Madame Roland . As a skilful speaker, he appeared particularly against the Mountain Party in the National Convention . At the end of 1792, Barbaroux campaigned for Louis XVI. to save life and to submit the judgment of the National Convention to a referendum . It was only after this project failed that he voted for the death of the former king. In May 1793, he unsuccessfully opposed the National Convention's plan to extend the powers of the Welfare Committee . His request to restrict the powers of the representatives in missions also failed.

Because of his criticism of Maximilien de Robespierre and his supporters, whom he accused of striving for the dictatorship , he was persecuted during the beginning of the reign of terror and placed under house arrest on June 2, 1793. However, he managed to flee first to Caen and later to Bordeaux , where he founded a resistance group against the mountain party.

After his conspiracy was discovered, he and several other opponents of Robespierre were arrested and sentenced to death . On June 25, 1794, he was with the guillotine executed after he had tried in vain to suicide to commit.
