Charles L. Clapp
Charles L. Clapp (born November 1, 1922 in Wakefield, Massachusetts ; died February 13, 2006 in Washington, DC ) was an American government official. From 1974 to 1981 he was a member of the Interstate Commerce Commission .
Life
Charles L. Clapp was the oldest of three children. He served in the US Naval Reserve in the Pacific from 1943 to 1946. He completed his state-sponsored studies at Tufts University in 1947 with a bachelor's degree with magna cum laude. He then studied at Harvard University , which he finished in 1947 with a master's degree.
After graduation, he worked from 1947 to 1952 as a lecturer at Florida State University in the field of political science. At the same time he also worked at the University of California at Berkeley from 1949 to 1955. There he completed his Ph.D. from.
In 1955 he began working in Washington DC, initially supported by a grant from the American Political Science Association, he worked in the offices of Peter Frelinghuysen and John F. Kennedy . From 1956–1957 he was a member of the staff on various committees of the United States Senate. In 1958 he was on the staff of MP Charles E. Chamberlain .
From 1959 to 1962 he worked at the Brookings Institution and wrote his 1963 book "The Congressman, His Work as He Sees It".
From 1962 to 1967 he was on the staff of Senator Leverett Saltonstall . This was followed by a two-year stint at the Smithsonian Institution .
After Richard Nixon was elected President, he became a member of the Advisory Board. He was nominated for the seat of the late Chester M. Wiggin Jr. on the Interstate Commerce Commission on November 5, 1973, and confirmed by the Senate on February 27, 1974. He took his oath of office on March 14, 1974. Since no successor had been appointed at the end of the regular term of office on December 31, 1980, he remained in office until the successor Frederic N. Andre was confirmed on March 19, 1982.
He then worked for the Postal Rate Commission until 1994.
He was never married and died of complications from prostate cancer .
