Charles Matthews

Charles Matthews (born October 15, 1856 in New Castle , Lawrence County , Pennsylvania , †  December 12, 1932 there ) was an American politician . Between 1911 and 1913 he represented the state of Pennsylvania in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Charles Matthews attended public schools in his home country until he was 14. Then he worked in rolling mills. At the same time he attended evening schools. Later he worked in the craft and banking industry. At the same time he embarked on a political career as a member of the Republican Party . In 1886 he participated as a delegate to the regional Republican Convention for Pennsylvania. From 1887 to 1893 he was a member of the New Castle City Council; in the years 1897 to 1900 he served as sheriff in Lawrence County there.

In the 1910 congressional election , Matthews was elected to the United States House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the 24th  constituency of Pennsylvania , where he succeeded John Tener, who had since resigned, on March 4, 1911 . Since he was not confirmed in 1912, he was only able to serve one term in Congress until March 3, 1913 .

After his tenure in the US House of Representatives, Matthews returned to banking. In June 1916 he was a delegate to the Republican National Convention in Chicago . Between November 26, 1924 and January 2, 1928, he served as a County Commissioner in Lawrence County. Charles Matthews died on December 12, 1932 in New Castle, where he was also buried.
