Henry de Vilmorin

Charles Philippe Henry Lévêque de Vilmorin (born February 26, 1843 in Paris , † August 23, 1899 in Verrières-le-Buisson ) was a French botanist from the well-known family of plant breeders Vilmorin . Its official botanical author's abbreviation is " H.Vilm."

He was the son of Louis de Vilmorin and Elisa Bailly de Vilmorin (1826–1868) and in 1866 he took over the management of the Vilmorin-Andrieux company, which his mother previously managed after his father's death.

In the company he devoted himself particularly successfully to new wheat varieties. In doing so, he used methods that his father had already successfully used with sugar beet.

In 1889 he was president of the Société botanique de France , of which he had been a member since 1860. Also in 1889 he became a Knight of the Legion of Honor . In 1885 he became a member of the Académie d'agriculture de France.

He is the grandfather of the poet Louise de Vilmorin through his son, the botanist Philippe de Vilmorin (1872–1917).
