Charles Tanguy
Charles Tanguy (* around 1845 in France ; date of death unknown) was a French-Canadian horn player, composer and music teacher.
Tanguy studied at the Académie de Valenciennes and the Conservatoire de Paris . He was a member of the orchestra of Jules Pasdeloup and the Orchester des Théâtre-Lyrique in Paris. During the Franco-Prussian War he was Kapellmeister in a regiment. He later played in orchestras in England, Scotland, Ireland, Switzerland and in the orchestra of the Paris Théâtre-Italy , was director of the Société chorale de St-Quentin and taught first at the Valenciennes Conservatory, then at the Bordeaux Conservatory.
As the first horn player at the Opéra français , he took part in a guest performance in New Orleans . In 1907 he moved to Montreal, where he worked as a teacher for wind instruments, violin, piano and singing. His students included Jean-Josaphat and Guillaume Gagnier .
Tanguy composed ballads, piano pieces and patriotic chants. Canadien toujours! (based on a text by Gaston Leury , 1907) and Patrie (text by Albert Ferland , 1909) enjoyed great popularity.
