Charlton Castle is the ruin of a fortified mansion between Shrewsbury and Telford in the English county of Shropshire .

history

Sir John Charlton received permission from King Edward II in 1316 to fortify his mansion (English License to Crenellate). This fortified house was then called Charlton Castle and apparently still served as a residence for the Lords of Powys in the early 16th century.

In 1588 it was bought by Francis Newport, 1st Earl of Bradford , but then it fell into disrepair.
