description

Erected in 1887 in the Queen Anne style as a stop on the Old Colony Railroad , the building has a rectangular floor plan of 45  ft (13.7  m ) by 22  ft (6.7  m ). The company had rented the property and the building from the Chatham Railroad Company, which in turn had no rolling stock itself . With the takeover of the Old Colony Railroad by the New York, New Haven and Hartford Railroad in 1926, passenger traffic on the rails was discontinued and replaced by a bus connection.

On July 5, 1930, the station was finally shut down after the railway company had completely stopped both the rail freight traffic and the bus service that had existed until then. The tracks were then taken over a length of 7.8  mi (12.6  km ) and sold to Japan as scrap metal with a total weight of 756 tons . The station building was then empty and was to be demolished in 1958. Before this could happen, two private individuals bought the building in 1959 and donated it to the city on condition that it be preserved and converted into a museum, which opened in July 1960. The building has remained unchanged to this day and largely preserved in its original state.
