The philosopher Vikentios Damodos (Vincenzo Damodo) founded a philosophical school of national importance in the place in 1723.
In 1997 the place was incorporated into Lixouri and has been part of the municipality of Kefalonia since 2010 as part of the administrative reform .
The iconostasis and the frescoes of the Panagia Church are worth seeing. Due to its height, the place offers a good view of the peninsula and has earned it the nickname Balconyi tou Ioniou ('Balcony of the Ionian Sea').
