Che Dalha

Che Dalha (Tibetan: ཆེ་ དགྲ་ ལྷ, born in August 1958 in Shangri-La , Province of Yunnan ), also known as Che Zala and Qizhala known is a Chinese politician who since January 2017 Chairman (governor) of the Tibet Autonomous Region is . Originally from Yunnan Province, he served as Secretary of the Communist Party in the Tibetan capital of Lhasa between 2012 and 2017 . He has been a member of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China since October 2017 .

Life

Che Dalha was born in Zhongdian County (later renamed Shangri-La), Yunnan Province, as a member of the Tibetan minority . He left school at the age of 10 to tend cattle in his home village. He later graduated from elementary school and high school by teaching himself. In 1979 he passed the official exams of the Zhongdian District with good results and got a part-time job as a rural official in the Communist Youth League. In 1983, 25-year-old Che Dalha became secretary of the Zhongdian District Communist Youth League. He later rose to become Party's deputy secretary and then Zhongdian District Party secretary.

Between 1994 and 2001, Che Dalha was instrumental in bringing the " Shangri-La " brand to life in Zhongdian County, making the area a major tourist destination. In 2001, when he was promoted to governor of Diqing Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture , the Zhongdian District was officially renamed Shangri-La. In 1996 he attended Yunnan Nationalities University and graduated in 1998 with a degree in economics with a focus on ethnic minorities. He also holds a bachelor's degree from the Central Party School in Politics and Law. In Diqing, Che Dalha was credited with making the region "the best Tibetan region in China" as documented by official Chinese sources. In 2010, in Yunnan, he became a permanent committee member of the Provincial Party.

In September 2010, Che Dalha was appointed head of the United Labor Front Central Division in the Tibet Autonomous Region. In 2011 he was elected Vice-Chair of the Political Consultative Conference for Tibet. In 2012 he was appointed party secretary of the Tibetan capital Lhasa. The move was welcomed by some Lhasa residents as Che Dalha replaced a Han Chinese, Qin Yizhi . In his office as Lhasa party leader, he visited Chicago and met with US Senator Mark Kirk . His tenure in Lhasa was largely determined by the modernization of the cityscape.

On January 15, 2017, Che Dalha was appointed chairman of the Tibet Autonomous Region to succeed Losang Jamcan . He was the ninth ethnic Tibetan to take the post after the Cultural Revolution was over and the first chairman from Yunnan Province. He was also the first chairman in 20 years to be born outside the Tibet Autonomous Region.
