Chelyoidea is a genus of humpback chirps with only five species that occur in northern South America and in Central America (also on the Caribbean islands).
The Celyoidea leafhoppers are about 4 to 6 mm long. The overall shape is almost hemispherical and is often compared to a turtle or a shiny ladybug. The pronotum largely covers the abdomen and wings. On the front side the pronotum has two points that are reminiscent of small ears. The pronotum is shiny, mostly clearly dotted and hairy only in some places. The base color is mostly dark, but parts of the pronotum, especially at the rear end, can also be blue-green or yellow. Some species are also spotted. The very closely related genus Todea can be differentiated mainly through genital examinations.
Way of life
These humpback chirps are often found in groups with small ants. The ants build small shelters for the cicadas in which the eggs and larvae are protected. In rainy weather and overnight, the adult cicadas also come to these shelters. The Chelyoidea leafhoppers have been found on plants from at least five different families.
