Chen Nanxian (born October 1937 in Shanghai , China ) is a Chinese physicist and university professor. He is a professor at Tsinghua University and director of the Institute of Applied Physics at Beijing University of Science and Technology.

life and work

Chen graduated from Beijing No. 8 Middle School and in 1962 the Department of Physics at Peking University . In 1984 he received his PhD in electrical engineering from the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia and then researched at the New York Academy of Sciences until 1986 . He returned to China in 1987 and was professor and director of the Institute of Applied Physics and director of the academic committee of the physics department at Beijing University of Science and Technology. He began to study the problems of blackbody radiation and specific heat inversion and got a number of results. In 1997 he was elected an academic at the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and in 2000 he became the deputy director of the academic committee of the prestigious Tsinghua University , director of the academic committee of the Faculty of Science and Technology, and director of the Institute of Applied Physics of the Beijing University of Science and Technology . He was the head of an expert group on high-tech functional materials. He researched the physics of condensed matter and worked to find an exact solution to the question of lattice-specific heat. He has received a number of awards for his work: in 1981 he received the CDC Technology Invention Award (design for micromagnetic ring laser windings), in 1991 the Beijing Excellent Teacher Award, in 1993 the National Natural Science Second Prize (inverse problem in applied physics), and in 1994 a senior Researcher Award from the International Research Center for Theoretical Physics, 2001 National 863 Program (Atomic Potential Pool) and Hong Kong Polytechnic University Award for Outstanding Chinese Scientists (Atomic Interaction Potential), 2003 National 973 Program Award for Outstanding Achievement (Interface Atomic Potential Pool), 2007 Liang Heli Science and Technology Award, 2008 Li Xun Lecture Award. After returning to China, he began to get involved in politics and joined the Chinese Association for the Promotion of Democracy, one of the eight non-communist parties in China. He was then vice-chairman of the 8th, 9th and 10th Chinese Association for the Promotion of Democracy in Central Committees.
