Cheon Woon-young , also Cheon Un-yeong or Cheon Un-young, (* 1971 in Seoul ) is a South Korean writer .

Life

Cheon Woon-young was born in Seoul in 1971. Her father was a factory manager. Since the family also lived on the factory premises, this environment is one of their most formative memories. She spent her childhood mostly alone, which is why she began to deal with literature in the form of fairy tales at an early age. She later studied communication science and literature at Hanyang University . Her short story The Needle appeared in the spring supplement for literature and art in the Dong-a Ilbo and received an award in 2000.

These and other stories from this period led Cheon to be regarded as a representative of a new generation of feminist authors. The self-discovery of women in society is no longer the central issue.

The question of what remained of the traditional image of the family does not arise, because the family in her narrated world has already been dismantled and the survivors are the women. The female characters such as in Die Nadel have found their own ways, are hedonistic, strong and also willing to use violence to assert their interests.

Cheon's precise method of observation is outstanding, with which she defines the aesthetics of her narrated world. She is also known for works that are based on extensive research. Her works tell stories that are seldom found in the world of Korean prose until now, and are often reminiscent of a documentary. Extraordinary protagonists such as a tattoo engraver or strange locations such as a slaughterhouse, in which innocent animals are processed for consumption, leave a lasting impression on the reader.
