The Cheradi Islands ( Isole Cheradi in Italian ) in the Gulf of Taranto are a small archipelago that closes the harbor basin of the Mar Grande of Taranto, in the Gulf of the same name, in the southwest. The archipelago consists only of the two islands of San Pietro (118 hectares) and San Paolo (5 hectares). There used to be a third island, San Nicolicchio , but it disappeared due to the expansion of the cargo port. Administratively, the islands belong to the old town of Taranto (district III Città Vecchia - Borgo ).
The island of San Pietro , in German St. Peter, is named after the apostle Simon Petrus . For San Paolo was Paul of Tarsus Pate.
The islands are under military domain. Only part of the island of San Pietro is accessible to tourists. Both islands have military installations that were used to defend the city of Taranto during World War II but have not been used since. On the island of San Paolo you can see the Fort Laclos , a fortification that Napoléon Bonaparte had built and placed under the command of the artillery general Choderlos de Laclos . On the island of San Pietro there is also a 120 m high antenna that connects the Taranto military base with the military communications network.
The sea around the islands is rich in marine fauna, especially sponges .
