The Chikugo ( Japanese 筑 後 川 , Chikugo-gawa ) has its source at Mount Aso and flows through the Japanese prefectures of Kumamoto , Ōita , Fukuoka and Saga into the Ariake Sea .
At 143 kilometers in length, it is the longest river in the Kyūshū . It is named after the ancient Chikugo province to which its lower reaches belonged.
