history

The first Chili's was on March 13, 1975 on Greenville Ave. opened in Dallas Texas by Larry Lavine. The food on offer was so popular that long queues often formed in the parking lot to get a table in the restaurant. In 1979, the building's veranda was remodeled to allow those waiting to order margaritas while they waited for a table. At that time, burgers, chilli, tacos and French fries were almost exclusively on the menu.

The chain operates restaurants in 49 states in the USA , as well as in 30 other countries, such as Venezuela , Saudi Arabia and Egypt . The 1000th restaurant opened on August 3, 2004. The first and only Chili's in Germany to date opened on August 5, 2004 at Ramstein Air Base . Chili's Ramstein was closed on September 7, 2013 for necessary renovations and reopened on August 18, 2014. At the end of September 2013, a smaller restaurant under the Chili's too brand was opened in the KMCC Mall, which remained open until May 2018. In 2009 Brinker International closed all branches in England and Australia .

On September 20, 2004, September 25, 2006 and September 24, 2007, the daily proceeds of all restaurants belonging to the parent company Brinker International were donated to the St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.

menu

Chili's offers American foods that are slightly influenced by Mexican cuisine. Starters include Awesome Blossom Strings (onion rings in a spicy breading), Boneless Buffalo Wings (spicy chicken nuggets), and Fried Cheese (deep-fried mozzarella). Classic nachos, fajita nachos and quesadillas make up the Mexican component of the menu.

Popular main dishes are the Big Mouth Burgers , Fajitas and Baby Back Ribs .

The song

Chili's (Baby Back Ribs) is a popular advertising tune in the United States. It is used in the company's commercials to highlight the different variations of pork ribs on offer. The song is sung a cappella by a quartet. Three phrases of the song have entered American pop culture:

  • a baritone voice staccato : "I want my baby back, baby back, baby back, I want my baby back, baby back, baby back ..."
  • a tenor voice: "Chilliiiiiii's baby baaack riiibbs… .Chili's baby back ribs"
  • a bass voice: "Barbecue Sauce"

The melody was composed by Guy Bommarito and produced by Tom Faulkner for GSD & M Advertising, Austin , Texas . Cover versions of the promotional song exist, among others by * NSYNC and Evander Holyfield . The jingle was quoted and parodied by "Fat Bastard" in the film Austin Powers - Spy in a secret missionary position . It appears in the sitcoms " Will & Grace " and " Scrubs " among others . In Scrubs, it is claimed that this is the only song the hospital's own a cappella group knows that contains the word “baby”. In the same episode, the group "tortures" someone by singing the baritone part of the song over and over again, with no other lyrics.
