The China Airlines Flight 006 (call sign: Dynasty 006) was a non-stop flight between Taipei and Los Angeles , who was involved in a serious accident on February 19 1985th Over the Pacific , just off the American coast, there was an engine failure , as a result of which the Boeing 747-SP went into a nosedive and lost about ten kilometers in altitude within two minutes. The aircraft was badly damaged and two occupants were seriously injured. The plane made an emergency landing in San Francisco .

About ten hours after taking off from Taipei, the China Airlines plane ran into turbulence. The autopilot tried to counteract the turbulence . When the automatic thrust control wanted to give more power, the thrust lever belonging to engine number four remained in the idle position. The flight engineer therefore incorrectly assumed that the engine had come to a complete standstill and asked flight control to be allowed to go to a lower altitude in order to restart the engine there.

As the speed decreased, the master neglected the fact that the altitude control of the autopilot was still working. Only when the aileron had reached an unusual deflection did he switch off the autopilot in order to descend without adjusting the trim ; it came to a stall.

The machine turned on its right side at 63 degrees and went into an uncontrolled dive. In 112 seconds, the machine lost 20,500 feet (6300 m) altitude. The maximum acceleration reached 5.1 g; the machine was approved for a maximum of 2.5 g. As a result of this structural overload, both wings were permanently bent, the landing gear locks partially broken and broken off several meters from both horizontal stabilizers ( see picture above ), the auxiliary power unit (APU) was torn from its anchorage.

Due to spatial disorientation and the enormous g-forces acting during the free fall, the crew was initially unable to counteract the further fall. When the cloud base was breached at 3300 meters, the pilots regained control of the aircraft and were able to make an emergency landing in San Francisco with severe damage to the aircraft. Despite the dramatic course of the accident, all passengers survived.
