Chinese Opium Den is a lost short film from 1894 produced by Thomas Edison . The film was recorded on 35 mm film and presented on the kinetoscope in a 1.33: 1 format .

Nothing is known about the content of the film. Film historians suspect that the film addresses the subject of substance abuse , making it the first film to deal with the subject.

The slapstick film Rube in an Opium Joint from 1905 is thus the oldest surviving film that deals with the subject of drug abuse.
