The Chittagong Commonwealth War Cemetery is a military cemetery in Chittagong that is under the care of the Commonwealth War Graves Commission .

history

The Chittagong Commonwealth War Cemetery was created during the Second World War on the area of ​​a former rice field with originally around 400 graves. The oldest tombs date from 1939. Later graves from other cemeteries on the Chittagong Commonwealth War Cemetery reburied , especially from Chittagong Civil Cemetery, the Chandragona Baptist Mission Cemetery, the Chiringa Military Cemetery, the Cox's Bazar New Military and Civil (Muhammadan) Cemeteries, the Chittagong (Panchalaish) Burial Ground, the Dacca Military Cemetery, and several other cemeteries. Some of the reburies came from Assam cemeteries . Today there are over 700 graves of Commonwealth soldiers in the cemetery , 17 of which are graves of unknown soldiers. A Dutch seaman and 19 Japanese soldiers are also buried on the site. The Chittagong Memorial, also located in the cemetery, commemorates the seamen of the Indian Navy and the Indian merchant navy who died in the war at sea .
