The Chiuta Lake is a shallow lake belonging to the Niassa Province , Mozambique and the greater part of the Machinga District , Malawi, 20 kilometers north of Lake Chilwa .

description

At the highest water level, the 3–13 km wide and 64 km long lake has an extension of over 200 km², of which Mozambique has a share of 49 km². It is believed that there was a connection with Lake Chilwa in the Pleistocene , from which there is still an underground inflow under sand up to ten meters high. To the north, when the water level is high, Lake Chiuta is connected by a marshy narrowness to the elongated Amaramba Lake , which is also rich in fish and from which the Lugenda flows. There are some small islands in the lake.
