Cho Se-hui (born August 20, 1942 in Kap'yŏng , Kyŏnggi Province ) is a South Korean writer .

Life

Cho Se-hui was born in Kap'yŏng in 1942. In 1963 he studied creative writing at Sorabol College of Arts , then Korean literature at Kyung Hee University .

In 1965 he won the literary competition of the daily newspaper "Kyunghyang Shinmun" for his story Funeral Ship Without Sails . After his debut, the author continued to work as an office worker. In 1978 his collection of short stories, The Dwarf , was published, the twelve interrelated stories of which deal with the needs of industrial workers in the 1970s.

A year later, Cho received the Tongin Literature Prize for this work . The dwarf has been considered a classic in Korean literary history since its publication and has had a great influence on both readers and writers to this day.

Cho later turned to photography and traveled through South Korea to capture scenes from people's everyday lives.

In 1990 he released White Jacket . Since 1997 he has been working as an editor for the socially critical magazine "Tangdae pip'yŏng" (Current Critique of Time) and since 1999 at the Kyung Hee University, where he studied.

In 2000 he published his photo and short story volume Wurzel des Schweigens with photographic materials about an incident in 1980 in which the police violently ended a demonstration by mine workers. 24 years after its first publication, Der Zwerg had its 150th printing in 2002. On this occasion, the literary magazine "Authors World" (Chakka segye) published a special issue dedicated to the writer Cho Se-hui.
