Orléans-Rothelin

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The aristocratic family Orléans-Rothelin was an illegitimate branch of the House of Orléans-Longueville .

history

The name of the family goes back to the nobility title Marquis de Rothelin (or Rottelin ), which was first borne by the Baden family and then by the Orléans-Longueville family. The title, translated “ Margrave of Rötteln ”, refers to the Upper Rhine margravate Hachberg-Sausenberg with the center of Rötteln , which was never owned by the Orléans dynasty.

Jeanne de Hochberg

The name goes back to Rudolf IV (1426 / 27–1487), Margrave of Hachberg-Sausenberg and Count of Neuenburg from the House of Baden, who appeared at the Burgundian court as " Rodolphe de Hochberg, marquis de Rothelin ". His son Philipp (" Philippe de Hochberg, marquis de Rothelin ") made a career in the French service and rose to Marshal of Burgundy and Governor of Provence . From his marriage to Marie von Savoyen only the daughter Johanna emerged, which led to the fact that with Philipp's death in 1503 the margraviate Hachberg-Sausenberg fell back to the Baden main line by inheritance contract ( Röttelsches Gemächte ).

Johanna, married to Louis I. d'Orléans, premier duc de Longueville , however, became Countess of Neuchâtel (" Jehanne, comtesse souveraine de Neuchâtel "). Her husband called himself iure uxoris also Marquis de Rothelin , challenged the inheritance contract with the margrave of Baden on behalf of his wife and made (unsuccessful) claims to the margraviate with the support of the French king and some federal estates.

After Johanna's death in 1543, her only surviving son, François, took over the title of marquis and maintained the claims. A son, also called François and known as " Bâtard de Rothelin ", emerged from an illegitimate and inappropriate connection between François and Françoise Blosset . He received his father's title of Marquis de Rothelin and thus founded the Orléans-Rothelin branch line. The branch line in Varenguebec , Neaufles-Saint-Martin and Heuqueville in Normandy was wealthy .

In 1581 Marie de Bourbon settled the dispute with the House of Baden-Durlach on behalf of the House of Orléans-Longueville after paying 225,000 guilders. The House of Orléans-Rothelin, however, continued to carry the title of marquis de Rothelin.

Charles d'Orléans de Rothelin - " l ' Abbé de Rothelin ".

The Orléans-Rothelin family existed in the male line until the middle of the 18th century, the family name expired in 1818 with Françoise-Dorothée, comtesse de Rothelin , the wife of the statesman Timoléon de Cossé-Brissac . The best-known member of the family was the scholar Charles d'Orléans de Rothelin , known as " l ' Abbé de Rothelin ". The Parisian Hôtel de Rothelin-Charolais goes back to the family . However, there is no connection with the fictional Eugène de Rothelin from the work of the same name by Adélaïde de Souza .
