Chokri Cherif (born May 24, 1966 in Bourouis , Tunisia ) is a Tunisian engineer , scientist and university professor specializing in textile and fiber technology. Since 2005 he has headed the Institute for Textile Machinery and Textile High-Performance Materials Technology (ITM) at the TU Dresden .

Life

Chokri Cherif came to RWTH Aachen University in 1985 with a government scholarship to study mechanical engineering, and in 1992 completed his mechanical engineering degree with a focus on textile technology. In 1993 he was awarded the Tunisian President's Honorary Prize for the most successful student abroad. After studying mechanical engineering, he began studying economics (also at RWTH Aachen University), which he completed in 1995. Until 2001 Cherif worked as a research assistant, first at the Institute for General Mechanics, and later at the Institute for Textile Technology at RWTH Aachen University. In 1998 he received his doctorate with distinction and qualified as a professor in 2001. From 2002 to 2005, Cherif worked for the Swiss company Rieter Ingolstadt Spinnereimaschinenbau AG , where he was most recently department head for development and construction.

In 2005 he accepted the professorship for textile technology at the Technical University of Dresden (TUD), where he also became head of the Institute for Textile Machinery and Textile High-Performance Material Technology (ITM). From 2010 to 2013 Cherif was President of the International Association of Universities for Textiles - AUTEX, from 2013 to 2015 its Vice President. Since 2012 he has been a member of the DFG's "Lightweight Construction / Textile Technology" college . Cherif is also a founding member of the Research Center for Carbon Fibers Saxony (RCCFS) and the C³-Carbon Concrete Composite eV

The main research areas of Chokri Cherif are textile high-performance materials and fiber composite materials. For his work with carbon concrete ("The fascinating material carbon concrete - economical, gentle, beautiful") he and Manfred Curbach received the German Future Prize for Technology and Innovation in 2016.

In 2017 Cherif received the Order of Merit of the Republic of Tunisia for "his special achievements and services abroad".
