Khomeinishahr ( Persian خمینی‌شهر Chomeynīshahr , alsotranscribedas Chomeynī Shahr ) is a city in the Iranian province of Isfahan and the capital of the Khomeinishahr administrative district. At the 2006 census, the population was 218,737, divided among 57,551 families.

Khomeinishahr is part of the Isfahan metropolitan area. Before 1930 the name of the city was Sedeh (سده), later Homāyūnschahr (همایون‌شهر), and finally from the Islamic Revolution 1979 Chomeinischahr (= Chomeynis city ) in honor of the theocrat Ruhollah Khomeini . However, the original name Sedeh lives on locally .

history

According to popular belief, the original name Sedeh comes from Seh-dež and means three castles ( dež / دژ means castle). This name can be traced back to the founding of the city by the merging of three neighboring defenses. The main castles are Kohan Dež and Gar Dež ( pronounced Dar locally ). According to this, Seh-dež is said to have been a Sassanid military base and Ateschgah (fireplace) on the top of a mountain near the city. The name may also be traced back to the old Iranian Sadeh festival .

The city consists of five former villages, mainly from the three municipal priorities Chūzan (local Chizun pronounced), Foruschan (the origin of Foruschan was Paris Chan / angel face) and Varnosfaderan ( Venesfohun ). This can still be seen in the cityscape today.

Under the reign of Reza Shah Pahlavi , the name of the city was changed to Homayunschahr, which literally means "happy / sublime city". Homayun was also a title of the Shah, and so the name should also reflect the splendor of the Pahlavi dynasty . After the Islamic Revolution of 1979, the city was renamed again, this time after Ayatollah Khomeini, the leader of the Islamic Revolution.

The Azad Islamic University has a campus in the city, with a focus on mechanical engineering and electrical engineering .
