history

Presumably in 1216 a nun's cell was donated by the Lords of Kranichberg. A monastery was mentioned in documents in 1260 and a prioress in 1306. From 1654 to 1657, under the prioress Anna Jakoba Pollinger, a new building of the baroque monastery complex was built according to the plans of the architect Georg Gerstenbrand. The collegiate church of St. James the Elder was built as a baroque new building from 1754 to 1756. In 1782 the monastery was abolished. After that, the convent buildings were privately owned. In 1828 the buildings were acquired by the Archdiocese of Vienna under Archbishop Leopold Maximilian von Firmian and became the episcopal refectory and housed the forestry office and apartments. In 1990 the monastery with Sacred Heart Priests was restored and the forestry office relocated. In 1999 the monastery was repopulated by Dominican women who form a Dominican community.

Monastery building

Four-wing system with niche chapel

The irregular monastery complex around the parish and collegiate church has an early baroque four-wing complex north of the church. The four-wing complex was built by the architect Gerstenbrand over a late medieval building. The three-storey facility shows on the facade a cast stone block in the plaster and banding. The main portal with a skylight has stucco volutes . A chapel-like niche with an early baroque altar is integrated into the southern front. The altar as a columned retable shows the year 1647 in the predella. In the arched niche there is a Pietà from the second quarter of the 15th century. The blasted gable of the altar shows God the Father in the octagonal extract and choir women under the protection of the bishop in the predelle image . The courtyard of the four-wing complex has walled arched arcades with beveled pillars and groin vaults on the ground floor . The other ground floor is largely vaulted with spike cap barrels. The upper floor has stucco mirrors on the ceilings.

Side wing with fortifications

In the southwest and south there are side wings with the rectory on a hillside. The building was erected in 1720 over late medieval fortifications. The late medieval gate and a steep staircase were preserved. One to two-storey superstructures are located above a high basement. The facade shows slit-shaped loopholes and the plaster of the plaster. The late medieval gate shows the mural Crucifixion with Mary and John with a Renaissance frame around 1530.

Economic tract

To the north-west of the main building is an elongated farm wing as a remnant of a former farmyard . The two-storey building has barrel vaults with stitch caps and a round arched passage with the coat of arms with the indication DH and the renovation date 1974.
