Choriosity is an a cappella pop choir from Ulm . It was founded in 2013 by a group of students from Ulm University and the choir director Martin "Monty" Winter and is part of the CVJM Ulm. With over 100 active singers, it is one of the largest choirs in the Ulm region.

history

Choriosity emerged from a student project choir at Ulm University in summer 2013. Upon completion of the project, the choir was continued by popular request. Martin Winter took over the musical direction of the choir. By contacting the CVJM Ulm, its premises could be used for the rehearsals. This developed into an intensive cooperation, so that after some time Choriosity was accepted as an integral part of the YMCA Ulm and part of its youth work. The first public concert of Choriosity took place in 2014 in the Café JAM of the CVJM Ulm.

In 2016, Choriosity was asked to participate in the "Total Vocal" event with Deke Sharon at Carnegie Hall in New York. Intensive fundraising (e.g. with a 24-hour singing marathon), sponsoring, support from the YMCA Ulm and contributions from members made it possible for almost 100 members to travel to the event in 2017. This made Choriosity the largest participating choir on this project. On April 9, 2017, the concert took place at Carnegie Hall.

In 2018, Choriosity celebrated its 5th anniversary with two anniversary concerts in June, which attracted a total of over 1000 visitors. Due to the high demand, another anniversary concert was held in November.

Choir work

The choir is open to anyone interested. An audition is generally not required to join. The choir, including musical and organizational management, works on a voluntary basis and organizes itself. In doing so, it is partially supported by full-time and voluntary employees of the YMCA Ulm.

repertoire

The basis for the selection of the repertoire is the selection of songs, which are regularly performed in the choir. These are carried out in two basic democratic phases: in the first phase, each member can propose songs, in the second phase the submitted proposals are voted on. A repertoire is then selected from the proposals with the most votes, taking into account the available arrangements and stylistic balance.

The repertoire includes contemporary pop pieces, many of which are adaptations of current titles from the charts. There are also covers of well-known a cappella groups as well as occasional compulsory pieces for competitions and individual songs from other genres. The choir arrangements for the pieces come partly from other choirs, musicians or arrangers, but partly they are also written especially for choriosity by a member of the choir or the choir director.
