Chorlton-on-Medlock is now a part of Manchester in England . It is not to be confused with Chorlton-cum-Hardy , another part of Manchester.

history

In the Middle Ages, Chorlton-on-Medlock was known as Chorlton Row and a place in what was then the parish of Manchester. Towards the end of the 18th century, the town began to be developed into a suburb of Manchester and a number of cotton mills settled in the far north of the area .

In 1838 Chorlton-on-Medlock became a district of Manchester, even if the south of the area was still heavily influenced by agriculture. Owens College opened in 1873 and is now part of the University of Manchester , laying the foundation for the university campus that characterizes the area today.

Historically, the River Medlock formed the border between the actual city center of Manchester and Chorlton-on-Medlock, but today the area is often counted as the city center of Manchester.
