The River Medlock is a river in Greater Manchester , England .

course

The river rises between Oldham and Saddleworth on the edge of the Pennines and flows into the River Irwell after about 16 km . While the Medlock is a popular local recreation area in its upper reaches, it is rebuilt many times when it reaches Manchester city center . It runs under the parking lot of the City of Manchester Stadium , the campus of the University of Manchester in the area of the former University of Manchester Institute of Science and Technology (UMIST). When it meets the Bridgewater Canal directly at the Bridgewater Viaduct in Deansgate, it is led through a culvert with an overflow to the canal. However, this was closed because of the very poor water quality of the river. The natural course of the river is later higher than the canal, but it is led into a tunnel under the canal basin of the Bridgewater Canal in the Castlefield area, where diversions have also been set up for flooding. The River Medlock finally flows into the River Irwell shortly afterwards.

Shipping

The River Medlock was navigable in the late 18th century between the Bridgewater Canal and what is now India House on Withworth Street near Manchester Piccadilly Station .

Others

A small area bounded on the north side by the railway at Manchester Oxford Road Station and on the other by an arch of the river was known as Little Ireland in the 19th century and was described by Friedrich Engels in his book The Location described by the working class in England as one of the worst slums in Manchester. Today a sign on Cambridge Street near New Wakefield Street commemorates this slum.
