Manchester Piccadilly is the main train station of the British city of Manchester and is on the West Coast Main Line . Trains run to London , Birmingham , Cardiff and Scotland, among others , as well as numerous destinations in the north of England . Apart from eight stations in London, Manchester Piccadilly is the largest and busiest train station in England and the second largest in Great Britain after Glasgow Central . In the 2005/06 operating year, it was used by 21.230 million passengers. It is far more important than the other two train stations in the city center - Manchester Victoria and Manchester Oxford Road . Manchester Piccadilly is one of 17 train stations that are not managed by a railway company, but by the infrastructure company Network Rail .

The above-ground terminus comprises twelve platforms, which are several meters above street level. To the south of the station concourse are the through tracks 13 and 14, which can be reached from the main hall via a moving walkway . The main entrance is below the station concourse and leads to the parking lot and taxi stops. The Manchester Metrolink light rail station is located in the former basement of the station .

history

Main hall of the train station

The station opened on May 8, 1842. At the beginning it was called Store Street , a little later Bank Top . It was the terminus of the Manchester and Birmingham Railway , which from August 1844 shared the station with the Sheffield, Ashton-under-Lyne and Manchester Railway . In 1847 the station was renamed London Road. The London and North Western Railway , Great Central Railway and North Staffordshire Railway also used the station.

After the merger of almost all British railway companies into four companies in 1923, trains from the London, Midland and Scottish Railway and the London and North Eastern Railway stopped here . Even after the nationalization in 1948, London Road was separated into two operationally independent parts, as two different, strictly separate operational regions of British Rail met here.

In 1910, Manchester Mayfield Station was opened next door to cope with the ever-increasing passenger traffic. It was closed again in 1952, but individual special trains still stopped here until 1960. In the meantime, a parcel center was located in Mayfield station.

After the renovation in 1960, the station was London Road in Piccadilly renamed. At the end of the 1990s, the glass roof of the main hall was replaced. In 2001 and 2002, further modifications were made in view of the 2002 Commonwealth Games . In 1992, the Manchester Metrolink light rail station was set up in the basement .
